Kitchen Layouts Galley Kitchen

Getting your kitchen design right is essential to creating a functional and practical space that’s safe and comfortable for all the family. The size of the room will determine the best layout for your kitchen space, alongside any additional priorities you may have in terms of family size, appliance needs, and how high and wide you’ll want your cabinets.

What is a galley kitchen?

The galley kitchen consists of two parallel rows of cabinets creating an inner passage or galley between them, named after the same small layout found in ships. The ideal solution for limited narrow spaces, it makes good economical use of all its units using every millimetre of space effectively.
It’s the most efficient layout for cooking giving you a perfect work triangle (working distance between fridge, sink and hob), whilst also being extremely cost effective since they usually require fewer cabinets and counters.
The downside is the small space can leave you feeling claustrophobic, meaning you can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen. So if you like to socialize while you’re cooking or are likely to have many people running around your kitchen this might not be the best layout for you. It’s also best to avoid putting in too many tall units as it will end up leaving your kitchen feeling cluttered and overcrowded.
There are a few things you can do to help make an otherwise small and cramped-looking  kitchen feel much more open. Countertops with less clutter will give the illusion of extra space for cooking and meal prep, while sticking to brighter colours will help the room appear larger and brighter. Being savvy with your storage will also help massively with preventing the space from feeling too crowded, like integrating compact appliances into the units or limiting the amount of wall cabinets by leaving one wall with open shelving.
